Adeline: A Young Activist’s Journey in Breaking Stigmas in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
Like many young people, Adeline grew up in an environment where discussing sexual and reproductive health was challenging. For her, the silence wasn't just uncomfortable; it was a reason to speak up.
"Growing up, I didn't have the resources or spaces to openly discuss sexual and reproductive rights. Even something as natural as menstruation was surrounded by stigma and stereotypes. That always stayed with me."
Now 22, Adeline has witnessed the impact of stigma on families, schools, and communities. Inspired by these experiences, she co-founded SheRising, an organization that teaches girls in grades eight through 12 about sexual and reproductive health and rights.
"I've heard stories from friends, coworkers, and community members, and I realized that collective action is necessary. But collective action isn't just about saying the words; it's about asking, 'What steps can we actually take?'"
Facing Backlash and Pushing for Inclusion
Talking about SRHR isn't always easy, especially in places where the topic is still considered taboo. Adeline remembers the challenges she faced while visiting India shortly after attending the Oxfam Youth Summit in Canada.
"I tried to start conversations that included all genders. But I faced challenges; institutions often want these discussions to remain in women-only spaces. There's fear around how men might react. That's a real barrier we need to work through if we want true inclusivity."
She believes that SRHR is not just for women. Everyone should be involved, and that starts with creating open, inclusive spaces for conversation.
Why the Oxfam Youth Summit Was a Good Choice
When Adeline learned about the summit, she knew it was the right opportunity. As a sociology student studying SRHR among South Asian women, she saw the summit as an opportunity to learn and grow.
"The summit was eye-opening. One of the most important lessons I learned was about decolonizing SRHR and recognizing the systems we've inherited and how they shape our experiences and actions."
She also appreciated that the summit allowed young people to participate freely. Everyone had a chance to listen, speak, and reflect.
Putting Lessons into Practice at SheRising
Adeline works with Erin and Jona, who help lead SheRising. Their team already valued equal voices and collaboration. However, after the summit, Adeline became even more focused on how they manage time and work.
"At SheRising, we don't set deadlines just for the sake of having them. If someone needs more time, we give it to them. Impact matters more than speed."
"The summit helped me realize that everyone's insights and experiences matter, regardless of how much you know. That kind of openness is what makes real change possible."
