GO-Rice
The Situation
Climate change is making things harder. More floods, salt water moving in, and unpredictable weather threaten rice fields and farmers’ incomes. The government of Vietnam has set a goal: turn one million hectares of rice land into cleaner, more climate-friendly farms by 2030. But doing that takes money, new tools, training, and strong systems to track progress.
In recent years, Oxfam tested a tool in one province called Rice Hero, which lets farmers use a phone app to measure how much carbon their farm produces. Building on this experience, Go-Rice will support the Government of Vietnam in developing a unified, standardized Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) tool that meets international standards and can be applied across provinces. This tool will help farmers and policymakers track emissions reductions, improve transparency, and link with emerging carbon markets.
However, these cleaner farming practices are not widespread yet. Many farmers don’t know how to use them, don’t have access to them, or lack support. The systems to monitor emissions are weak, and farmers can’t yet tap into markets that reward cleaner rice.
This project aims to fill those gaps — helping farmers grow rice in a smarter, cleaner ways that are good for planet. It also looks at what happens after harvest, like using rice leftovers instead of burning them and turning waste into useful products. By doing this, farmers can earn more, protect nature, and connect with new partners, including business and investors from Canada, who want to support greener farming and fair trade.
DETAILS
Location:
Vietnam
Duration:
5 years (2025-2030)
Thanks to our Supporters:
This project is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada, provided through Global Affairs Canada, and the generous Canadian public.

What are we doing?
The project will help farmers grow rice in cleaner, smarter ways
Farmers will learn to use less water and fewer chemicals, keeping the land and rivers healthy.
The project will use simple tools to track pollution from rice fields
An app/ICT tool will show farmers how to reduce emissions and protect the environment
The project will connect farmers to fair and green markets
By selling low-carbon rice farmers can earn better incomes while caring for the planet.
What do we hope to achieve?
We will support about 40,000 people, more than half of those rice farmers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta to grow rice in cleaner, more sustainable ways including post-harvest management.
We will reduce pollution by helping farmers use less water and fewer chemicals, protecting soil, air, and health.
We will make sure women farmers have equal access to training, tools, and fair markets so everyone benefits.
We will help farmers earn more by producing low-carbon rice that can be sold in local and international markets.
We will build new green trade and investment links between Vietnam and Canada, creating shared benefits for people and the planet.
