Rights of Indigenous Women

Icon:Indigenous Peoples

Amidst the horrors being unearthed at residential schools, Indigenous women are standing up for their rights, pushing forward important legislation and action plans, and taking up leadership positions.

The changes Oxfam wants to see:

The federal government should:

  1. Work in collaboration with First Nations, Inuit and Métis women’s organizations to eliminate gender and racial discrimination in the Canadian healthcare system and other public institutions.
  2. Step up the federal response to the MMIWG Calls for Justice with more financial resources and systemic changes.
  3. Provide resources for Indigenous-led investigations, commemorations and justice for victims and survivors of the Indian residential school system in Canada.

Questions for candidates in your riding:

  1. How will your party tackle sexism and systemic racism against Indigenous peoples in the health care system and other public institutions?
  2. What will your party do to ensure a speedier implementation of the MMIWG Calls for Justice?
  3. Will your party provide support for Indigenous-led investigations, commemorations and justice for the lives lost in Canada’s residential school system?
