Poverty & Racial Justice

Poverty Icon

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the inequities of poverty in Canada and intensified calls for the government to address the long-term impacts of colonialism and systemic racism.

The changes Oxfam wants to see:

The federal government should:

  1. Continue to collect and track race-based data that is equity-focused through Statistics Canada.
  2. Ensure sustainable funding for the anti-racism secretariat to monitor and address systemic racism in federal institutions.
  3. Mandate anti-racism and anti-oppression training in federal health agencies, and work with provincial and territorial counterparts to do the same.

Questions for candidates in your riding:

  1. Will your party commit to ongoing funding for anti-racism initiatives at the municipal, provincial and federal levels?
  2. Will your party commit to providing core funding to support racialized and Indigenous women’s organizations so that they can continue to tackle poverty and gender inequality?
  3. How will your party reduce income inequality, improve working conditions and create access to equitable employment opportunities for racialized Canadians and immigrants at all skill levels across sectors?
