Care Work

Providing access to care that is high-quality, affordable and accessible to all families is key to achieving a more equitable economic recovery.

The changes Oxfam wants to see:

The federal government should:

  1. Honour signed child care agreements, and reach similar agreements with remaining provinces and territories, to support the creation of a national, affordable and high-quality early learning and childcare system.
  2. Work with the provinces to uphold the labour rights of caregivers and domestic workers, including living wages, and ratify the International Labour Organization Convention 189 on the protection of domestic workers.
  3. Establish legislation to cement Canada’s commitment to quality, long-term, affordable elder care by increasing federal investment in non-profit and publicly managed long-term care homes.

Questions to ask candidates in your riding:

  1. Does your party have a plan to implement a national, affordable early learning and child care system in all provinces and territories? What is your timeline?
  2. How will your party ensure all workers in the care sector make living wages and have decent working conditions?
  3. How will your party address the crisis in long-term care?
