What We Do
Oxfam Canada works with people to secure their basic human rights, combining support to long-term development and humanitarian responses with research, advocacy and campaigning against the root causes of poverty and injustice.
The Way We Work
Oxfam Canada believes Canadians and other citizens of the world can end poverty and injustice by working together in solidarity to assert their basic human rights. Our approach to development includes a number of key elements.
Where We Work
Oxfam Canada supports long-term development, advocacy and emergency programs in 28 countries around the world. Our core programs are located in the Americas, the Horn of Africa, Southern Africa, South Asia as well as our work here at home in Canada.
Emergencies
In recent years, Oxfam Canada has increased its capacity to respond to humanitarian crises, both natural disasters and conflict. In the case of rapid-onset natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunami, Oxfam Canada works to meet basic needs, protect lives and promote health, and to restore livelihoods, supporting recovery and reconstruction.
Campaigns
When people are blocked from opportunity, they often need to change laws, customs, and policies. Without these changes, real progress against poverty cannot be achieved. Oxfam's economic and political analysis helps us change the minds of powerful decision makers.
Themes and Issues
While Oxfam specializes in helping communities realize individualized solutions to their problems, our work takes on universal themes. From community to community and region to region, we see people facing like challenges—and pursuing like solutions to their needs.
