Maasai women leaders: turning cultural “bomas” into sustainable enterprises

Thirty-eight year old Oleteti Narkusdan stands in front of a small traditional house made from mud, sticks, grass and cow dung. The Maasai of Northern Tanzania call the structure a “boma”. In Oleteti’s boma, you can purchase jewelry, arts and crafts, all made by Oleteti in the hopes of increasing her family’s income.

Anna Almas: Never Thought She Could Stand in Front of Men and Speak

Despite laws and policies for equal rights in Tanzania, cultural traditions continue to deny women their rights. Through Oxfam partners such as MPLC, women like 40-year-old widow Anna Almas are attending tribal meetings and speaking up for the first time in their lives.
