At events across Canada this week, in honour of International Development Week (Feb 4-10), Oxfam Canada will highlight its extensive work to secure women’s rights overseas. The theme of this year’s International Development Week is ‘Equality between women and men. To have a voice. To have a choice.
‘Gender equality is pivotal to human progress and sustainable development, said Robert Fox, executive director of Oxfam Canada. ‘This week Oxfam supporters will reach out to all Canadians with one message: equality between women and men is essential if we are to eradicate poverty.
Oxfam Canada supports local community organizations in 28 countries to promote women’s rights. Through innovative programs that give women access to land and loans, mobilize communities to stop violence against women and girls, and end exploitation of women factory workers, Oxfam works to increase women’s capacity to defend their rights and secure improvements in their lives.
‘CIDA did well to choose Women’s Equality for this year’s theme, Mr. Fox added. ‘Our hope is that this will lead to increased funding for women’s rights both overseas and in Canada.
In collaboration with other organizations, Oxfam will host local events in Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, St. John’s, Saskatoon and Ottawa.
