Human Rights Day: Help Oxfam Canada End Violence against Women and Girls

December 10, 2012

Statement by Robert Fox, Oxfam Canada Executive Director

“Every day we see the tremendous courage and commitment of women, some very young, who are taking great risks to promote rights for women and girls. Violence and the threat of violence is a daily reality for far too many women on this planet – women working in maquilas, farmers in their fields, girls in school, refugees, toddlers, the elderly.

Today, International Human Rights Day, we are reminded that we need to do more to support these women, increasing funding to women’s organizations and strengthening their voice.

We welcome today’s statement from Rona Ambrose, Canada’s  Minister for the Status of Women, acknowledging the seriousness of the issue and the importance of supporting women’s rights.”
