"I first came to Oxfam in 2010 as an intern in the Vancouver office in the role of Program Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator through the YWCA’s Youth Eco-Internship Program. I was drawn to Oxfam for its commitment to tackling the root causes of global poverty and injustice, building strong partnerships both globally and locally, and focusing on gender justice. As an intern, I had the opportunity to work closely with the amazing and hardworking regional staff and active working groups throughout the region. I was able to support Oxfam's campaigns by helping to coordinate outreach activities and collaborate with local partners.
After the ten month internship ended, I stayed on as a volunteer because I couldn’t imagine not being involved with the Oxfam community in the Lower Mainland. I am currently serving as Chair of the BC/Yukon Regional Steering Committee and am a member of the local Advocacy and Outreach Committee. I get to continue working with other dedicated members towards strengthening the volunteer and membership base in the region, building strong community support though engagement and collaboration, and learning from and sharing stories from our amazing overseas partners.
The most exciting part of my experience has been working with many dedicated volunteers to carry out campaign activities in creative and interesting ways, whether it’s through the development of new educational tools or dancing around in the streets dressed as a chicken! I have met so many inspirational and committed people over the past couple of years through my involvement with this wonderful organization and am constantly inspired and motivated by what we can achieve when we work together. I believe that our combined efforts regionally, nationally, and globally will make a difference in the movement towards a more just and sustainable world and I look forward to continuing this important work with my global ‘Oxfamily’!"
