"The volunteer work I have done with Oxfam Canada has been an amazing opportunity to meet new and interesting people who value social justice and equality. I came onboard at the onset of the Oxfam in Edmonton Chapter and we haven’t looked back since. Together, we began organizing monthly potluck diners and hosting speakers of the month. This framework of community building through sharing a meal and awareness building through presenting information, has been instrumental in creating and sustaining a group who enjoy being together. Watching this group effect change and grow has been very rewarding.
I originally chose Oxfam because of the organization’s focus on providing communities with funding for projects based on the needs of that community. Instead of imposing a predesigned set of parameters which communities must enter into in order to receive funding, Oxfam partners with organization which are already in place or trying to get off the ground. This insures that it is the people within the community are the drivers of change – an important consideration if widespread change is to occur. It is this philosophy of facilitation, not imposition, which inspires me and reminds me in my daily life to be a conduit for change and not try and dictate change.
Currently, our group is organizing a “Comedy Night” fundraiser which is sure to be a blast. The Coldplay concert of which Oxfam Canada has been asked to help raise awareness for social justice and equality is just around the corner. In addition, we continue to have monthly potluck diners and are always looking for fun festivals to join and spread the word!"
