In South Africa, one woman is raped every 23 seconds. 58 children are raped every day, of whom 15% are under 11 years of age (SAIRR) and one woman is killed every 6 days by her intimate partner (Vetten 1996).

Here in Canada, most people have heard of the Red Ribbon and White Ribbon Campaigns, the former to create awareness about HIV/AIDS and the latter concerning violence against women. In South Africa, Oxfam Canada supports the Red and White Ribbon Campaign which is creating awareness of the links between violence against women and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Launched in November 2003, the campaign had a target of reaching 400,000 beneficiaries in Gauteng Province but moved on to include North West Province, reaching a total of 600,000 people.
