Food insecurity, famine, displacement and ongoing humanitarian emergencies are putting vulnerable populations in dire need. Yet, humanitarian assistance is diminishing as rich countries focus inward and deal with massive deficits. In recent weeks, the escalating crisis in Afghanistan has stunned the world. Heartbreaking footage has shown tens of thousands of Afghans enduring extreme heat, overcrowding and poor conditions in the hopes of finding safety abroad. Global leaders must work together to welcome refugees, from Afghanistan and elsewhere, commensurate with the global scale of need. They must also increase humanitarian aid to the low-income neighbouring countries that are hosting the vast majority of asylum seekers.
