I’ve learned that underlying problems can not be solved by superficial antidotes like having free and fair elections, many of which have not been either free or fair. I’ve learned that a better world can only be achieved through a much more fundamental transformation of our society, not simply with superficial kinds of changes.

Through my experiences with Oxfam, I have learned an enormous amount but I think that most of all, I have gained an appreciation for the importance of women’s rights and why they are central to finding solutions to ending global poverty. I have also gained a significant amount of leadership experience, which I will continue to build on, and which will surely benefit me in the future.

I am happy that the legal analysis and documentary review work I did could improve the lives of many Canadian women, especially those who are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS by reason of their social status, immigration status, and other relevant factors. I also hope it would impact the lives of women in the developing world.

I started with Oxfam when I was just out of high school, so it’s hard for me to disentangle what I’ve learned from Oxfam from what I’ve learned from life in general. Oxfam has not been my entire life over the last eight years, but my life wouldn’t have been the life it’s been without Oxfam.

After 12 years I can say that my volunteer experience with Oxfam has sparked personal growth and learning opportunities that I could not have contemplated when I first joined as a member.

Being fortunate enough to live in such an affluent country, it is easy to forget how unfairly impoverished most other parts of the world are. When I participate in every campaign and event, I know I’m helping to make a difference in changing the world for the better.

Oxfam’s commitment to connecting youth members across the country through the CHANGE Initiative has allowed us to share our experiences, increase our confidence and develop effective strategies, so that we can continue to outreach, promote and educate others about Oxfam’s work and the issues that matter.

For many years I have been a regular donor to Oxfam Canada, but it was only when I heard of the terrible devastation caused by the Asian tsunami that I began volunteering. In early 2005 I started volunteering part-time at the Oxfam Canada office in Halifax. I am able to use some of the special skills I learned during the 30 years I was a high-school librarian.

By volunteering with Oxfam, I have developed an appreciation for the importance of women’s rights. I have also gained a wealth of facilitation experiences and learned so much about many of the social issues affecting the world’s poor.

Oxfam campaigns link at the local level and at the macro/global level, and the concrete actions Oxfam is encouraging individuals to take to make a real difference at the policy level are a powerful motivator for public engagement and advocacy.

Over the past 15 years, through volunteering and donating, I have become increasingly confident that my membership has made a difference – I've seen up close how my actions and dollars have added up to make real change.

Working first-hand with communities severely affected by global injustice has made me determined to continue contributing from home and Oxfam has enabled me to do this.

I formed a student club at Langara College called Oxfam Langara. So far we have 14 active members, organized four successful events and currently we are working on a fundraising fashion show called “Dare To Wear”. I am also a member of the Oxfam Regional Steering Committee.
