Messages of Support for Women on Farms
Oxfam Canada donors send messages of support to our Women on Farm partners in South Africa.
For years, Roseline Presence lived and worked in harsh conditions. As a woman farm worker in South Africa, the only work she could get was low-paid and seasonal. She also faced other unfair labour practices that are all too common in many parts of the world. Illegal firings. Home evictions. Work-related violence.
But thanks to Oxfam Canada partner Women on Farms (WFP), Roseline became an advocate for women working on the farms of the Western Cape. Women on Farms focuses on improving working conditions by developing women’s leadership skills and helping women earn income year-round. Today Rosaline is a Program Officer for WFP. She helps other women living and working in the same conditions she faced, by building alternative income opportunities for women farm workers.
In June, 2010, Roseline was one a number of Oxfam program partners from around the world who took part in the Gender Justice Summit in Toronto: a gathering of Oxfam members, donors and other supporters. Her inspiring story and those of others helped energize everyone present.
Roseline's story was also featured in a letter to Oxfam supporrters across the Canada. Here are just a few of the many notes of encouragement sent to Oxfam in support of Roseline's work!
