Oxfam's Programs in Cuba

Oxfam has been working in Cuba since 1993 with local partners to support equitable and sustainable development. Oxfam works in municipalities, with national organizations and with regional groups to promote South-South experience sharing around active citizenship and participation, gender equality and risk reduction.The work focuses on various projects, including:

  • Women's rights
  • Urban and organic agriculture
  • Access to basic services and medicine
  • HIV and AIDS awareness and care
  • Hurricane and drought risk prevention and management
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Achieving the Millennium Development Goals

 

Program Objectives

1. To promote sustainable rural development to improve local food security in the Eastern region of the country.  The program focuses on areas undergoing restructuring of sugarcane production in order to support sustainable production for local markets and gender equality.

2. To strengthen disaster prevention, mitigation and preparation as well as early warning systems.

3. To support efforts to increase citizens' capacity, consciousness and awareness to participate in the transformation process that supports their development.

4. To make gender violence a problem that is acknowledged, publicly debated and rejected by wide sectors of Cuban society.
