International Trade
Trade can be a powerful engine for poverty reduction. But rigged trade rules and double standards too often mean it now hurts poor people’s livelihoods.
International Trade
World trade could be a powerful force for reducing poverty, if poor people could sell their products at a decent price. What is stopping them? The gross injustices of the world trade system. Unfair trade agreements and agricultural subsidies hamper efforts to reduce poverty in poor countries.
What Oxfam is Doing
- Helping organizations advocate for fair trade rules
- Oxfam Canada is one of 13 Oxfam International affiliates that are supporting organizations in poor countries demanding pro-poor trade policies from their own governments and the World Trade Organization.
- Changing the rules of trade
- Oxfam produces high-quality research and advocates for responsible policies that will help poor people benefit from international trade. Oxfam's policy recommendations are considered at the highest levels of governments and the WTO.
- Building a global movement to Make Trade Fair
- Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign calls on decision makers to make trade part of the solution to poverty. To do this, we are building a global citizen movement to promote change in world trade.
