In recent years, Oxfam Canada has increased its capacity to respond to humanitarian crises, both natural disasters and conflict. In the case of rapid-onset natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunami, Oxfam Canada works to meet basic needs, protect lives and promote health, and to restore livelihoods, supporting recovery and reconstruction.

Haiti Earthquake 2010
A major earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday 12 January, causing catastrophic destruction across the city of two million people in the western hemisphere's most impoverished nation.

Darfur, Sudan
In its fifth year, the Darfur crisis continues to be one of the world’s largest concentrations of human suffering. The sheer enormity of the crisis is almost unimaginable. 2.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes and are living in vast, crowded camps in both Darfur and across the border in Chad. More than 4.5 million people are now affected by the conflict and depend on humanitarian assistance. The violence goes on and the numbers continue to rise, with thousands more fleeing every month. Meanwhile, aid workers in the region are facing daily violent attacks, providing enormous challenges to our work.

Tsunami- four years on
The Oxfam Canada Tsunami reconstruction program has supported over 10,000 farmers, goat breeders and market vendors. Self-help groups were created and supported through micro-credit loans; 2265 women and 553 men have benefited from the loans and have created better lives for themselves.
