Oxfam Canada welcomes the decision by Loblaw Companies, owner of the Joe Fresh brand, and 30 other garment manufacturers and retailers to sign the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh to help protect workers from further disasters. Oxfam urges other companies from Canada, the U.S. and around the world to join those who signed onto the accord.

The Humanitarian Coalition and its five member agencies (CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Québec, Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada) are launching a national joint appeal to raise funds to assist the 6.8 million Syrian civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in their country.

A new coalition of tea companies, non-governmental organisations and certification organisations said today that systemic problems are locking-in low wages for tea workers.

With nearly 7 million people in need of humanitarian help inside Syria, Oxfam is calling on the United Nations Security Council to use its influence on the Syrian Government and opposition groups to help improve access for humanitarian aid delivery.

Wildfires have long been a major problem in Ethiopia. Hunters use fire in forests to flush out wild life and smoke out honey bees. Farmers use fire in fields to control brush. Many people cook with fire.

 

In Eastern Sri Lanka, Oxfam and local partner Sarvodaya established 60 village livelihood groups to help hundreds of women start profitable activities. It was through one of these groups that Jeevagolin received training that led her to establish a sucessful sari embroidery business.
