Oxfam Canada Welcomes the Newly Elected Government

October 21, 2015

Oxfam Canada welcomes the new government’s commitment to restoring Canada’s role in the world.

We are in a pivotal moment for Canada to show leadership in creating a more sustainable and equitable world.  The new Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework for addressing gender inequality and poverty, at home and abroad, and world leaders will have the opportunity in Paris this December to forge a deal strong enough to avert climate catastrophe — which we know would hit poor women farmers the hardest.

We look forward to continuing to work with the government on long-term development and humanitarian programs that address the root causes of poverty and injustice by putting women’s rights at the heart of all we do.

For the past year, Oxfam Canada has worked alongside 175 other organizations as part of the Up For Debate campaign, which asked leaders to make meaningful commitments to women’s rights at home and abroad.  We look forward to seeing the government work with women’s rights champions from across party lines and throughout civil society to turn these commitments into realities.
