Teaching about the Tsunami Disaster in Asia / Africa

This section links to new educational materials from Oxfam GB's Cool Planet
website to enable teaching around the current humanitarian crisis
caused by the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Materials linked from this
page can be adapted for use in Canadian classrooms and other
educational settings.

Background information

On
26 December 2004 an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale occured
deep in the Indian Ocean. Huge waves sent out by the quake devastated
coastal communities in India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Somalia, Sri
Lanka and Thailand.

More
than 150,000 people have been killed and millions of lives wrecked by
the disaster. The death toll is set to rise as disease spreads. Oxfam
is providing emergency relief to hundreds of thousands of people across
Asia, and will be working with others to rebuild and develop the
affected areas over the coming months.

Classroom materials and activities

The
following lesson plans and activities are designed to help students
understand the impact of the Indian Ocean tsunami on communities in the
affected regions. All activities are designed to be used, with adaptation, across different age-groups. Key question to consider:
98% of all deaths from natural disasters occur in the worlds poorest
countries. Why do you think the poor are most vulnerable to natural
disasters?
