Oxfam Member Group Charter

Oxfam Canada has recently updated its group charter process.

Chartered local groups, such as campus clubs, represent Oxfam Canada at the grass roots level.  They are vital to the continued growth of Oxfam as a civil society movement and organization, working in solidarity alongside our work overseas.

In order for a group to be ratified, it must review the following guidelines, agree to them, and submit the relevant forms (posted below).

Guidelines

These guidelines are based on the Oxfam Canada By-Laws and Rules & Procedures and will refer to the key provisions.

1. The pertinent rules dealing with Oxfam Groups in the Oxfam Canada Rules and Procedures:

  • All of Rule 2 on membership with some reference to By-Law 3 and Rule 8.1
  • All of Rule 6 on Regional and Regional Steering Committees
  • All of Rule 3 OXFAM-Canada Groups

Knowledge of the above Rules is essential in the organization and chartering of groups as well as the retention of charters.  Groups are the official Oxfam bodies at community and constituency (such as campuses or youth) levels, and as such, their internal and public adherence to these provisions is essential for the credibility and consistency of Oxfam and its aims and policies.

2. Additional key guidelines:

  • All local groups members must be members of Oxfam Canada;
  • The minimum size for a chartered group is five (5) members, although larger groups are encouraged. The minimum membership level must be maintained for continued viability of the charter. A list with the names and contact details of at least five (5) members must be submitted with the charter agreement as part of the chartering process;
  • Reports, as referred to in the Rules, must be submitted to the relevant Regional Steering Committee, the regional office, the Regional Youth Liaison (for campus and youth groups), and the Regional Assembly.
