Host a Fundraising Event for Oxfam Canada
Oxfam Canada conditions and privacy - it's everyone's responsibility
Thank you for your support of Oxfam Canada. As a volunteer you play a valuable role in the work that is done for Oxfam Canada. Whether you are leading a fundraising committee, running an event or providing guidance, we are grateful for all that you do.
We want to make sure you are satisfied with your relationship with Oxfam Canada and that we are respectful of your needs and rights. Federal legislation introduced in January 2004 guards individuals' rights to privacy. Oxfam Canada is committed to making sure that any personal information pertaining to you, your volunteers and donors with whom you have contact, is protected.
As a senior volunteer for Oxfam Canada we ask you to review the following information regarding privacy and fundraising events. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about policy or procedures. Further information regarding our privacy procedures, including our Privacy Statement and Privacy Policy can be seen online at www.oxfam.ca/privacy-policy.
Collecting personal information: New federal law protects all 'personal information'. Please limit the amount and type of information you may collect from someone to what is absolutely necessary. Even when collecting names and home addresses, you need to explain to the individual exactly why you are collecting this information. Information that is collected for an explained purpose at one point in time cannot be used or shared for a different purpose at a later time without prior permission.
Safeguarding personal information: As an event coordinator you are responsible for any personal information you or others associated with your event may have collected in the course of running your event. Of particular sensitivity is credit card and medical information. Please take all necessary steps to protect personal information form theft and loss, as well as unauthorized access disclosure, copying or use. Once the information is no longer needed, please shred it.
Volunteers and accountability: Very few fundraising events would be a success without the help of volunteers. The person who is leading the way and has the overall responsibility for the event is responsible for ensuring that other volunteers associated with the event are aware of the responsibilities to do with the safeguarding and proper use of personal information.
