Mary Gazeta is a female food hero because she and a group of 3 others began a backyard fruit rescue program called the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project. The program evolved into the Sharing Farm which now manages 3 acres of land and donates, on average, 15,000 lbs of produce to the food bank and community meal programs. To date, over 200,000 lbs have been donated.Mary was also one of the founding members of the "Friends of Garden City Lands" group that fought developers from removing 140 acres of land from the Agricultural Land Reserve. This piece of property, located in central Richmond, is now owned by the City of Richmond and will be a protected greenspace becuase of Mary's initial work, galvanizing the community.Mary's most recent project has been to re-vitalize a garden a long-term care home for seniors. She organized a team of volunteers to help bring new life to this much needed green space.
