Oxfam Canada's Female Food Heroes

Marcella Pedersen, Cut Knife, Saskatchewan

Marcella Pedersen is a female food hero because she taught about Food Sovereignty through workshops that focus on food and water from the farmer to the consumer from a social justice perspective. In the above photo, the food is from one company - Phillip Morris Co - even if it looks like 4 or 5. This is to point out that there is no such thing as competition in the marketplace, even though competition is supposed to exist to reduce prices for consumers. Marcella is very concerned that we have lost a generation or two of people who know how to grow their own food as well as preserve and prepare it. She grows her own food (vegetables, fruit, chickens and honey), preserves, stores, and starts from scratch in cooking meals. She has a root cellar that keeps apples and cabbage until March and potatoes, carrots and parsnips until September. She is now learning about how to preserve her own seed as we need to preserve agricultural biodiversity.
