Oxfam Canada's Female Food Heroes

Edith Ling, North Winsloe, Canada

Edith Ling is a female food hero because she is a hands-on organic farmer in North Winsloe, PEI. She and her spouse, David, developed new methods of production and distribution of food, based on a love for the eco-system and for healthy food. The Lings sold organically-raised beef for 16 years at the Charlottetown Farmers Market. They promote a new system of farming to replace the destructive industrial model. Edith expresses her passion for family farming in the National Farmers Union (NFU). She served 16 years as District 1, Region 1 Secretary. This is her fifth year as NFU Women's District Director. She urges farmers to speak out. She challenges governments to protect and respect farm families. Edith always thinks of those disadvantaged by public policy. She opposes HST saying that while HST could be of a small benefit to farmers, it will hurt low-income people. Edith believes that people of goodwill have the power to turn the food system around.
