Nearly seven million people need humanitarian assistance in Syria as more than 1.4 million refugees have now fled and are in desperate need of shelter, food and water. Over half of them are children.

Oxfam Canada is contributing emergency donations for relief in the region of Mozambique most severely damaged by recent floods. The support will go to Oxfam programs designed to help farmers plant crops and to minimize the risk of cholera and other water born diseases in the Gaza province.

As Mali endeavors to re-establish peace and territorial integrity in the North, Malians are still struggling to pick up their lives after a devastating drought, a conflict, and massive displacement.

October 2012 - Oxfam geared up to help Haitians and Cubans in the wake of hurricane Sandy’s devastation in the Caribbean. Steps to prevent cholera spreading in Haiti and to provide roofs for houses in Cuba were among priorities.

 

The severe food crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa is now affecting some 18.7 million people. The federal government agreed to match public donations raised by non-government agencies between August 7 and September 30, 2012 to provide relief from hunger in the Sahel region of West Africa. The government made an advance payment of $10 million to the eight-week matching program.

Over 13 million people are at risk. A severe drought is ravaging the arid and semi-arid parts of east Africa, threatening the lives and livelihoods of pastoralist communities that depend on livestock for all their basic needs. Oxfam is responding to this urgent crisis in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia.

In 2012, Oxfam and its humanitarian partners in the Philippines, the Humanitarian Response Consortium, targetted communities hardest-hit by Typhoon Bopha (known locally as Pablo) on the southern island of Mindanao.

Key priorities including getting clean, safe drinking water to disaster-hit areas, establishing basic sanitation facilities and providing cash and starting cash-for-work projects to help families buy food, clothing and other shelter needs.

Oxfam is working to help people hit by a second year of flooding in Pakistan which is affecting over 9.7 million people

More than half a million people in Central America have been affected by flooding, landslides, washed-out roads and collapsed bridges due to heavy rains.

Oxfam provides humanitarian aid to serious humanitarian disasters that seldom or never hit the headlines.  Our Emergency Response Fund ensures that Oxfam can quickly respond wherever and whenever the need is greatest.  Assistance shouldn’t be dependent on media coverage.

Almost 10 million people across West Africa are facing a food crisis following erratic rains that have caused poor food harvests and water shortages.

Since 2003, the Darfur Crisis continues to be one of the world’s largest concentrations of human suffering. The region has a population of 7.5 million people and over 30 ethnic groups with over 60% of the population living in rural areas. The Darfur Crisis is a complex emergency that is a mixture of civil war, ethnic conflict, drought and a degradation of natural resources.
